Bernedoodles are currently one of the most popular doodle breeds. They are the perfect combination of poodle intelligence and the goofy, loyal personality of the Bernese Mountain Dog. The traditional Bernese coloring of black and red with white markings is the most popular color but, thanks to their poodle influence, Bernedoodles come in a wide variety of colors including, sable, black and white, brown and white, parti colored, merle, brindle...... just to name a few.
No matter the color, Bernedoodles are adorable, goofy, loving dogs that make wonderful family companions!
While they are not an AKC recognized breed, they are a very unique breed with a wonderful combination of traits and personalities from both parent breeds.
Do they shed?
Yes. Most Bernedoodles will shed to some degree. Some less, some more. The F1b Bernedoodles are less likely to shed versus the first generation Bernedoodles.
Grooming
It is important to realize that Bernedoodles require the same level of grooming as a poodle! The longer you want to keep their hair, the more brushing you will have to do. It is also important to learn how to properly brush your dog’s hair so that you brush ALL the way to the skin. This prevents mats from hiding by the skin while the surface looks brushed. Be sure that your breeder teaches you how to line comb your Bernedoodle....... your groomer will thank you and you can avoid the dreaded shave down of shame! It is also important to have your puppy groomed by a professional groomer as soon as they are vaccinated AND have them groomed regularly! We begin grooming our puppies at 3 weeks of age and they are groomed weekly until they leave for their new homes. This is very important because it helps get them used to the noises and sensations that are part of the grooming process. If your puppy is not groomed from a young age and/or you don’t continue having it groomed regularly they can become fearful of the process and that is a BIG problem! A big, hairy, stressed, fearful dog is every groomer’s worst nightmare! Having your puppy groomed at a young age doesn’t mean you have to cut all of its adorable puppy fluff off! A Bath, blow out, sanitary trim, nail trim, and possibly a little touch up here and there will keep your puppy looking adorable and mat free until you decide on a hairstyle that suits you! As a groomer myself, I am always happy to help you figure out how to communicate your desires clearly to your groomer so that you and your groomer can work together as a team.
